I Looked at the sound design in a short from my favorite game "TF2" or "Team Fortess 2".

Wheel Chair

The first foley sound I'm going to mention is the Demoman in the wheel-chair. The faint sound you can hear is metallic squeaking . I think there is a couple ways the sound couldve been produced. Either by rolling an old metal baby stroller, an actual wheel from a bike or possibly just by turning some form of squeaky tap. Its subtle becauses its done well but if it wasnt there the scene would be slightly off for me

Medical Bed Rattle

This sound is heard when Heavy is laughing and is shaking the medical bed. Its a very metalic clanging sound which inclines be to believe that the way they recorded the foley was with a metal guard rail or fencing of some sort, possibly both together.

Tray Smack

The Tray smack which follows the bed rattling sounds exactly like what its supposed to and I think thats how they produced the foley, by smacking a tray. along with just heavy smacking it there are also other metalic objects on the tray which clang together so i assume they used some metalic object or even another tray to get this.

Bird Flying

After the bird is shoo'd away from the Medic you can cleary hear its wings flapping. If i hadn't watched several videos where they demonstrated birds flapping i wouldn't of had a faint clue but this sound is probably some hitting a pair of gloves together.

Hand Grab

The sound they use when Heavy grabs the medics hand seems to be identicle or quite similar to one you would find when someone punches something. Which is usually produced by punching an open hand or potentially a faint clap for this instance.

The theme for the sound track in this instance would be medics song "MEDIC!"

The song is used just after "Medic" says the line "Let's go practice medicine" which starts a sort of montage getting ready to fight scene then the music culminates at the hill of soldiers after they pose. Its also good to note that the theme matches with the images on screen perfectly. Just like every song in TF2 the "MEDIC!" song is an origninal orchestral piece made for the game. i think in this scenario the film score is the same as the theme song

Ambient Music:

Explative / Incidental sounds

Theres a small tune that plays and leads up to the point where Heavy's heart explodes which subtly keeps the pace of the scene and slowly builds the pace along with the heartbeat to the climax heart explosion. All the musical elements in TF2 are orchestral, a lot of the side music you'll hear in "Meet the Medic" will sound either Angelic or similar to "MEDIC!" in some shape or form.

I Think that the "MEDIC!" song is slightly attached to the "Medi-Gun" as when the Medic stops using it the music stops, This seems to be the only instance of music attached to an item in the film.

If the angelic music wasnt playing when the Medic came out of the metal door the scene just wouldn't have been right, it was a necesarry inclusion for the film as a whole. It would've made the scene a lot less dramatic and it just wouldn't of fit the medic character if it wasn't used or if it was a different song all together.

All the music included (excluding the engineers guitar in the end scene) seems to be non-diagetic and have no origin in the actual TF2 film world itself. The music gives you an idea that the Medic is seen as an angelic figure because he can bring people back from the verge of death so the heavenly music that accompanies him fits into this ideo of him being an angel to the team.

I believe that Meet the Medic is all parallel music because all the songs match and dont seem to contradict the image. You could possibly say that the music seems a bit too happy or heavenly for the murder thats being commited in the field but from the point of view it fits because their plan is working and they are winning the advance. The very first song you hear is a fast pace drums which fits well up until the scout is almost definitely going to get blown up, but this still could be parallel as the music could be the scouts hope as they're running away and thats why its dropped when hes blown up.

How does ambient sound work in combination. Explain the different types of sounds used to create a 3D ambient soundstage.
Although Very minimal the ambient sounds work with the setting and the scenes that they're included in. Right at the start we can hear birds and the general wilderness but its broken with explosions and loud noises in contrast to the calm ones. Ambient sound isn't a big part of the overall film, i assume that it's because its a short 5 minute film about a character and without the ambience its more cartoony in a way.

Discuss the importance of ambient music to convey both alternative and true meaning- that is either Parallel and Contrapuntal in a sound context.

Ambient sound is cruicial to convey the meaning in scenes. you could have a really happy birthday scene for example but if there is a Horror-esc wining drone in the background you would feel uncomfortable and believe that something is about to happen that wouldn't be good. But if the scene had a more happier ambient sound like birds whistling it would convey a normal happy scene and thats how you would feel about it.

Select three different films that use ambient sounds meaningfully.
3 Films:

Spider-Man Movie (2002)

The Bells

deadpool

  • Describe how each film uses the ambient sound to create placement and understanding of the intention of the film.
  1. The Bells  uses ambient sound to create placement and genre by using the sounds of crickets and general outdoors which leaves a creepy sort of tone ruslting in your ears. sometimes thats all you can hear, until he becomes deaf. Thats when you start to hear horror style ambient music, the screetches, hums. The crickets seem to fill the silence, as we can hear after the man dies, telling us that the outside is normal but the inside isnt. The fact that you can hear the outside nature more than anything else tells us that the character could be lonely and in a quiet neighbourhood.
  2. With spiderman the main ambient sounds come from background voices and normal noise youd expect, like when hes fighing flash you can hear the crowd gossiping lightly. When he pucnhes flash this mysterious, quite anxious sound plays and drowns out the crowd which gives us a glimpse into what he's feeling and what he has to overcome.Later on, peter lets the criminal (who ends up killing uncle ben) and this suspenseful tone plays which tells us something bad is going to happen.
  3. In deadpool after getting told he has cancer a soft, serious and upsetting tone is playing as wade talks about his wifes face and also during when the doctor tells him not to do anything rash, this tone morphs into a more rock based track but is still in the back. Because its an action film there is a lot of suspenseful ambient noise.
  • Discuss how the sound types are combined in two examples for each film. Deconstruct these into component music, drone, sound texture, FX etc.

FX

  • How do Sound FX work in combination with your sound product to convey meaning. Explain the different types of sounds FX used in your product. Give examples
The sound FX work well in combination with the images we're shown on screen, each sound FX fits what its trying to sound like or exaggerate and doesn't sound rediculous by doing so. There are a handful of FX in "meet the medic" for example, the sounds made by the medics "Medigun", I'd say there is a lot of "Added accuracy" FX and has a few "off screen FX" explosions. a good example of FX is when the heavy is being healed an you can hear the exxagerated sounds of flesh.
  • Discuss the importance of sound FX to convey both alternative meaning- that is either Parallel and Contrapuntal in a sound context.
In some situations FX can dictate good and evil. If you have a character that is presented good but uses things with a more aggressive sound to them, it could infer that a change is about to occur. Sound effects really can change a film if they were switched for something different.
  • Select three different films that use sound FX sounds meaningfully. Discuss.
I Picked these three films. More specifically, i analysed these scenese:

With the Guardians scene i used, it incorperates the Sound FX of the power shutting down with the comedic timing and visual context. After this dramatic power down sound plays and silence falls for a second an alarm plays which tells us that what happened was wrong and theres a danger. At somepoint the alarm fades out which could signify the change in dominance between the main characters and the prison guards.

The lack of or delayed sound FX Made this scene in star wars: The Last Jedi have emotion, it made the scene feel dramatic and not for the sake of an epic moment. The fact that there was no fx made the scene special and reinforced the sacrafice the character on board had to make.

For This Section "Use Of Psychoacoustics" I will be focusing more on the game side but will cross to the Short if i need to. Overall, i dont think the game or short uses Acousmatic / Psychoacoustic sound. The game doesn't have an underlying musical track when you play. The only example of Acousmatic music i can think of would be the song that can ber heard when you're picking a character. It's a fast pace song, I think its the Scouts Theme Song, which could make the player want to get back into the action quickly. Another example could be the buzz you can hear in different maps could make you subconsciously want to shoot more to produce more sound and fill the empty space that you can hear.
Apart from these two examples i don't belive there are any other instances of acousmatic sounds. Although the "ding" sound you get when you hit someone could be a good example of well done acousmatic sound because we don't think about it but it does actually make us play more aggressive because it gives us confidence in our abilities.

I Believe that my sound product is quite flat or 2d in the sound space. The sounds you would expect to be slightly more in one ear than the other aren't. All the sounds in the shortfilm are central. The film itself will only use Diegetic sound. A good example of this is heavy's heart monitor. You can only really hear it beep when its on screen. I feel like they stayed away from making the sound 3D to make the film simple and not overcomplicated for the cartoonish style it is in. Although games with a similar style would probably use 3d sound for this i think the reason Valve didn't incorperate this was because it was made in 2011 but it could also be a time or budget situation.

The TF2 Short doesnt particulary utlilise reverb. The big explosion that should have reverb or echo don't and neither does anything else in the whole short. I don't understand why they didn't include reverb / echo since it would play well with the style its presenting.

Because there is no examples of this in the "Meet The Medic" Short im going to expand this part into the VIdeo Game itself. In the game itself you are able to hear reverb and certain sounds that will make the game sound more 3d and full than the flat Short. I Don't believe that they use Acousmatic sounds in TF2 but i could be mistaken. I know if different maps you are able to hear all sorts of ambient sounds, for example this hum on the map T-FORT:

At points you can also hear other sounds such as birds tweeting.

ADR - Automated Dialog Replacement

ADR is the process of re-recording audio in a studio setting to get a clearer dialogue that wasn't audible in the original filming or was muffled. It allows the viewer to hear the character properly and also can add emphasis to the product. Imagine if they didn't use ADR for the logan film, how bad would that whole scene feel, look and sound?

.

Lets compare two instances of ADR. One good, One bad.

The good example is from the film "Logan" and The bad example is from the absoloute CLASSIC "The Room". Here are the reference clips:

In logan they have clearly used ADR because of the distance between the camera and Hugh Jackman, But also, Hugh isn't always facing the camera so he would be severly muffled without the use of ADR. The scene wouldn't feel right if this process didn't take place. The use of ADR in logan makes the film feel complete, Imagine if Hugh Jackmans scream wasn't as loud as we heard it, this would have made the character look silly and possibly damage his reputation..

In the room they might have used ADR because they weren't happy with the original lines and couldn't re-film. The cameras could pick them up well so it wouldn't or shouldn't be a distance problem, so i don't know what happened. But Apparently "Due to issue with audio recording on set, Wiseau was forced to resort to one line every filmmaker tries their best to avoid: "We'll fix it in post." A solid chunk of dialogue in The Room is ADR" (Salemme, 2017) The ADR in " The Room" is so visible that it takes you out of the masterpiece completly. In all seriousness, it makes the already not so great film even worse.

Podcast Research:

Research into different podcasts:

1: Guildgates&Goblins a DnD 5e Podcast.

To be specific i looked into the Baldur's Gate Campaign Linked Here.

This podcast is a dnd based podcast where the cast play DnD campaigns

This podcast is on almost every podcast provider but I Listened on youtube where it is hosted as an audio visual podcast. Because of the game that the podcast is focused on the episodes are nearly always more than 2 hours since this is the typical lenghth of a session. Because of its length it becomes more of a background noise but i still manage to take in key points in the story.
